Research

The Frei Research Group focuses on developing chemistry-inspired tools to investigate complex cellular processes, such as cell signaling and metabolism, by advanced fluorescence microscopy. To this end, we apply both synthetic organic chemistry and protein engineering to generate novel sensing and perturbation tools. The hybrid nature of these tools allows us to exploit the advantages of their synthetic and genetically encodable components and use them for advanced fluorescence microscopy such as super-resolution microscopy or fluorescence lifetime imaging. Ultimately, this helps us to investigate understudied areas of biology.
